For over 88 years, The Salvation Army has served the people of Singapore, providing vital services and compassion to those who need it most. As one of the country’s largest social relief organizations, we have transformed countless lives through our food assistance programs, shelters, youth services, and more. Our dedicated officers, employees, and volunteers are committed to improving lives across the island.
In Singapore, basic necessities are out of reach for many struggling individuals and families. With the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, more people than ever need a helping hand. At 18 Salvation Army Food Distribution Centres across Singapore, we provide grocery packages, cooked food programmes, and food vouchers to assist over 5,000 people each month. Our beneficiaries include the elderly, the disabled, low-income households, and vulnerable women and children. Many rely on our food aid as their sole source of nutrition.
For those needing shelter, we operate Peacehaven Nursing Home and Safe shelters for the abused and destitute. At Peacehaven, we care for nearly 300 elderly residents who have no family to turn to in their final years. Our Safe shelters provide safety, counselling, and skills training for over 300 women and children escaping family violence each year.
In addition, we run eight Salvation Army Children’s Homes across Singapore. Here, our devoted house parents care for over 500 children and youth whose families are unable to support them. We provide a nurturing home environment along with counselling, life-skills education, and academic support. Our goal is to encourage each resident to develop their potential.
The Salvation Army also operates Youth Development Centres that engage over 2,000 troubled youth through after-school care, arts programmes, and outdoor adventures. We aim to guide youth towards positive life choices. For adults seeking rehabilitation, our residential programme at Tanglin helps break the cycle of addiction.
All of this work is sustained through the generous support of donors and volunteers. The Red Shield Appeal, our major annual fundraising drive in Singapore, enables us to maintain vital community programmes. We also depend on an army of volunteers who contribute their time and skills. Opportunities range from helping out at our Family Thrift store to planning engaging activities for youth to assisting with food distribution.
While The Salvation Army originated in London in 1865, Singapore is home to the first branch established in Asia in 1935. We are proud to be an integral part of the nation’s social service landscape. As Singapore progresses into the future, we remain committed to our mission of providing hope and dignity to those most marginalized.
We invite everyone to join us in doing the most good for our Singaporean community. Your contribution, however small, can go a long way. Here are some ways you can get involved:
